“speak your own language” collects a few recordings of lucky dragons playing a home-made string instrument with a central bridge (you might call it a “zither”). the design of the instrument, which is played by two players plucking / strumming / striking the strings on opposite sides of the bridge, is such that the actions of a player on one side of the strings effects the tone of the strings played by the other player. as one side of a string vibrates, bends, becomes tight or relaxed, the pitch of the opposite side responds in a mirror-like fashion. harmonies float around, not fixed in place, but come back to rest in a rough middle. mastered to be played at either 33 or 45 rpm, and pressed with a large center hole, play this record however you want.

as part of a residency program at the university of illinois urbana-champaign, sumi ink club invited open participation in the creation of a large scale collaborative drawing, which was then cut up into small sections, such that each participant received a piece of the physical drawing. each page of this zine documents one of the sections of the drawing that was distributed. you can see images of the meeting here.

one of five zines published on the occasion of “kaugummi books at family los angeles”, july 21st 2010, an exhibition featuring e*rock, geoff mcfetridge, david horvitz, sumi ink club, and estelle hanania.

sumi ink club’s contribution is a collection of details from larger collaborative drawings, reworked and collaged to create a second generation of images. as derivatives, the new images maintain the collective, composite style of the original work, inserting a layer of playfulness into the material transition from drawing to book.

This print serves as a program to A RAY ARRAY, a new video directed by Sarah Rara (of lucky dragons) that examines visual and aural interference. Structured like a collection of short stories, the piece is composed of 15 video chapters that deal with different forms of interference: from the failure of a message to be discernable, sudden interruptions, visual disturbance, the interaction of 2 sound signals, instability, and optical effects. The piece explores the subject of interference using simple sets, everyday objects, and subtle special effects.

sumi ink club created the window display for family bookstore here in los angeles: hand-painted wood cutouts of a reclining male nude with a shadow partner, resting in a field of sumi designs. reaction from customers and neighbors has been colorful and spirited, so sumi ink club put up an open call for poems written in response to the installation, which have been collected and presented in this booklet along with an array of details from the drawings. nice!

our friend lee tusman put together this special project before he left riverside: 10 parallel grooves, each containing sound by a different artist, each 43 seconds (at 33.3rpm).

when cali and jenna got married they invited sumi ink club to join in the celebration by hand-painting the wedding clothes… such an honor!! so many secret blessing-details and jokes were painted in that it seemed best to publish the silk tuxedo jacket as a zine… spread out across 32 pages in hyper-detail, something really nice happens: what you hold in your hands is a book, is a jacket, is a painting, is the most heartfelt sincere good wishes. a labor of love.

44 page full-color zine from helga fassonaki and andrew scott (metal rouge) featuring artwork (sumi ink club!), writing, recipes, and TWO cd’s (a 3″ and a regular-sized one!) by LA-based band “VIBES” (britt and amanda from pocahaunted / not not fun).

Made as a three-way collaboration between lucky dragons (music), hiroka nakano (design), and amy prior (fiction), “slumber party” is a book and record about sleeping into waking: 16 short stories in 40 pages, with moon-colored vinyl 7″ record enclosed, and glow-in-the-dark typeset on the cover.

in august of 2008 sumi ink club painted a mural on the face of this building at the corner of sunset and rampart in los angeles, CA. friends, friends of friends, and people walking down the street were invited to join in, and at the end of a furious week of painting with tiny brushes, over 60 people had contributed. from little kids obsessed with bikes to people just arrived in the US from costa rica and mexico, everyone had a story to paint out! this 40 page zine collects details from the larger piece upon its completion.
